Stine Bjørnstad

Senior Associate

Stine Bjørnstad primarily works in labor law and corporate governance. She assists both Norwegian and international clients in cases related to termination, downsizing, drafting employment contracts, investigations, and settlement agreements.

Previously, Stine completed several internships, including at the Legal Department, the Municipality Attorney’s Office in Oslo, and at Hjort. She also worked as a consultant at Romerike and Glåmdal District Court during her studies.

Stine was a writing fellow at Hjort and wrote her master’s thesis on the documentation requirements for selection in downsizing processes. The thesis examined the requirements imposed by the courts on an employer’s documentation in downsizing processes, particularly regarding the use of selection criteria.

Changes to the Safety Representative Regulations in the Working Environment Act

Safety representative arrangements are a crucial part of companies' efforts to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of employees. Chapter 6 of the Working Environment Act contains a duty to appoint safety representatives, and currently, exceptions to this duty are only permitted in busi-nesses with fewer than ten employees. From January 1, 2024, the scope of the safety representa-tive arrangement will be expanded.

The Proposed Changes to the Norwegian Working Environment Act Aims to Ensure a More Predictable and Secure Working Condition

In recent years, there have been several proposed and implemented changes to the Working Environment Act, including stricter regulations on hiring, especially with regards to temporary employment. On June 16th, the government presented proposals for new changes, covering the use of trial periods, the right to written justification statements if part-time or temporary employees request more predictable and secure working conditions, as well as the requirements for written employment contracts and the consequences of deficiencies in these contracts.
